DescriptionCOMPANY BACKGROUND & HISTORY

Established in 1931 in Beirut, KAROUN became a pioneer in the Middle Eastern dairy industry. Initially a small-scale manual operation, the dairy steadily improved its production methods by applying up to date technologies.

After World War II KAROUN invented a new process to produce drinking yogurt. It allowed producing this very popular product in the Middle East, hygienically and industrially. This production method is still in use after more than 55 years. This made KAROUN become a generic name for drinking laban in Lebanon.

In 1952, KAROUN DAIRY introduced pasteurization and began to home deliver fresh pasteurized milk in glass bottles.

KAROUN Dairy was the first to introduce in Lebanon the one-way plastic containers in 1968 replacing the returnable glass bottles of fresh milk and drinking laban. It was also a pioneer in introducing the round plastic cups replacing the clay pots of laban.

The same year KAROUN DAIRY began to market for the first time in Lebanon yogurt with real fruits under the brand "YOFRUIT".

In 1996, for the first time in Lebanon, KAROUN introduced laban, labneh and drinking laban in NO FAT - NO SALT varieties.

To day KAROUN DAIRIES' modern plant has a capacity of 50000L./day and is fully equipped to produce efficiently fresh dairy products and to be CIP cleaned. It has its own laboratory and maintenance facilities.

KAROUN DAIRIES is a practitioner of product innovation that relies heavily on benefit segmentation. It enters markets by introducing a new product with a new benefit rather than launching a me-too product.

KAROUN DAIRIES makes a practice of producing each of its brands in several sizes and forms to satisfy varying needs in the market place. However, it makes a continuous effort to improve the product quality over the product's life.

KAROUN DAIRIES' objective has always been to make available to every individual fresh dairy products of premium quality by applying hygienic practices.

QUALITY CONTROL

The oldest yet modern Lebanese dairy was built up on the principles of very strict quality standards. Quality control is based on elaborated methods and directives.

Amongst the most important quality controls are: · Raw Material Control: This control guarantees observance of the quality required for the cow milk, culture, and all other ingredients to produce constantly uniform and highly nutritious products. · Process Control: This control assures that pasteurization, homogenization, filling and incubation are carried out in strict application of our severe standards to have products free of any contamination with that delicious taste, aroma and creaminess that characterize our Fresh Milk, Yogurt, Laban, Labneh and Drinking Laban. · Product Control: The final quality control assures that the standards of microbiological purity, chemical characteristics and packaging standards are fulfilled.

PRODUCTS

FRESH MILK
pasteurized-homogenized

KAROUN'S FRESH MILK is the healthy, 100 % natural and fresh Lebanese milk. It is directly cooled at the farm to 4°C than transported to the dairy where it is homogenized to ensure that fat particles are dispersed equally throughout the milk thus facilitating digestion .The milk is than pasteurized at 90° degree C for 15 seconds than immediately cooled to 4°C to eliminate all the harmful bacteria that might be present in the fresh milk.

KAROUN'S MILK does not contain additives. It is an important source of calcium essential for the growth and maintenance of the teeth and bones and provides you with proteins minerals and vitamins.

PLAIN SET YOGURT (LABAN)

The origins of yogurt lie in the Caucasus Mountains where people have been making and eating yogurt for more than 4000 years. In 1980, E.Metchnikov, the Nobel Prize winning scientist wrote in his book "The Prolongation of Life" that the secret to longevity that he found in these mountains was yogurt. Nowadays, there is a growing body of evidence that probiotics or foods that contain live bacteria are good for the health.

To be truly effective, it is important that the bacteria (usually Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus) in yogurt are alive and consumed regularly and in large numbers.

In addition of being a delicious and nutritious food providing lots of protein, vitamins, calcium, and other minerals for relatively few calories, yogurt, with live and active cultures:
. may help decrease symptoms of lactose intolerance
. may help boost the immune system
. may help restore and maintain the intestinal flora so essential to digestion and good health. Fresh yogurts containing live and active cultures are always kept refrigerated before sale and have a relatively short shelf life. Heat-treated yogurts, on the other hand, do not contain live cultures and have longer shelf lives but the health benefits derived from live cultures are not found in them. At the dairy plant of KAROUN DAIRIES S.A.L, the milk arriving from the farm is pasteurized, cultures (Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus) are added and allowed to incubate at carefully controlled temperature for a specified amount of time to assure the growth of the cultures, then cooled under specific cooling conditions to have that special taste and aroma characteristic to our products. They are offered in full fat and no fat-no salt varieties in colorful packages. Ingredients: 100% fresh cow's milk, live active cultures. Shelf life: 21 days refrigerated at 2°-7° C. Available in 500g. 1Kg. 2Kg. 4Kg. 5Kg.

LABNEH (STRAINED YOGURT)

Labneh is a Middle Eastern dairy product. It is obtained by straining our delicious yogurt in the traditional Lebanese way. It is not heat treated after incubation to keep intact the abundant live active cultures beneficial to your health.

Our Labneh can be enjoyed in breakfast, accompany any meal or used as a dip with your favorite crackers or bread. It is also a refreshing dip for vegetables. It has a wonderful smooth texture. Labneh has a greater portion of the nutrients in yogurt because the whey has been removed resulting in a higher concentration of calcium per volume than other dairy products.

Serve Labneh as follows:
1-mound in a plate
2-drown in olive oil
3-sprinkle with pulverized spearmint
4-surround with black olives

To satisfy those who are looking to reduce their calorie intake or watch their cholesterol level or blood pressure, we produce a no fat no salt variety of Labneh. It is very low in calories, does not contain cholesterol and sodium, and is low in lactose.

DRINKING LABAN (TANN)

Drinking Laban is an ethnic refreshment of Armenian origin. It was initially produced by mixing an equal quantity of yogurt and water, adding salt to taste. It is a healthy and refreshing drink especially in the hot season when it replenishes the sodium level in the body after heavy sweating.

It is particularly delicious when drunk with your preferred sandwich, snack or the famous Lebanese thyme and olive oil bread (Mankoushe) and especially with Armenian pizza.

KAROUN'S Drinking Laban is produced by the method invented by the Baghdassarian family some 55 years ago. It has all the advantages of yogurt:
· It contains large numbers of live and active cultures
· It is very low in calories and cholesterol
· Suits well to lactose intolerant people
